How did our project make SLO more sustainable?

Our project, the back yard harvest, was designed to reduce the food waste  of specific neighborhoods. Many of the houses in SLO have trees decorated with apples, oranges, lemons, and many other gorgeous fruits however; much of it goes to waste because the owners of these trees do not pick the fruit. For the back yard harvest event, we distributed flyers in neighborhoods encouraging people to pick their fruit and drop it off as a donation to the FoodBank.
Additionally, if people were unable to pick their fruit and drop it off at the donation site, we offered our hands to do the labor for them. The GleanSLO team went to a number of houses and picked peoples fruit and dropped it off at the donation site.
All in all we collected 1,463lbs of fruit.
In the grand battle agains food waste, this project results may appear minuscule but even if one sun loved orange was spared the sad fate of garbage can; our project was a success.
