After Action Review
By Julianna Arvin
1. What was planned?
a. Objective: To have sustain students collaborate with
GleanSlo to create a trial backyard harvests program
b. Planned: We scheduled a backyard harvest day where our
method would be tested. We planed:
i. To make fliers
ii. Scope out neighborhoods with threes
iii. Hand out fliers
iv. Have a drop of location where people
would bring fruit
v.Pick peoples fruit
vi. Pick up peoples fruit
vii. Make signs
viii. Be there on the day to collect drop offs
ix. Review and evaluate our process
2. What actually happened?
a. Our backyard harvest idea got changed then what we
originally thought. It was going to be a drop off, pick up and
harvest fruit day. We originally thought we could do all
three of them.
b. It turned out that on the fliers we mainly publicized the fruit
drop of.
c. We did make fliers, we scoped out neighborhoods, we handed
out fliers and we had a collection drop of location and fruit
collection.
i.We had volunteers stay at the drop of
location to collect donated fruit
ii. We also had volunteers go out and pick
fruit from homes that registered their tree
online
d. We collected 1463 pounds of fruit!
3. Why did it happen?
a. I think out original idea got changed because sustain students
did not really communicate with our community partners our
vision. We kind of were passive in the process and so our voice
didn’t really get heard. I think if we had expressed our opinions
to our community partners then it would have been more
helpful. Although when working with others compromise is
necessary.
b. For our gleaning event I don’t think we got as many drop off,
as we had wanted. I think this was due to our time constraints
with publicity.
c. I think we let the community partners take control of the project.
We were still involved but more as other volunteers then as co-
planners.
i. I think this had to do with the limited amount of
time we could provide to the project and lack of
expressing our voice.
d. Overall, the first neighborhood-gleaning project was a success.
We did collect a ton of fruit to donate to the Food bank
4. What can we do next time?
a. I think next quarter the sustain volunteers can try to be more
expressive in their voice.
b. I also think that we need to work on publishing aspect of
events/gleanslo.
c. Perhaps even looking at a different aspect of their program to be
involved in. Such as efficiency, publicized …ect.
d. I also think our group needs to meet without our community
partners to decide what we all want to do.
